Obituary

Mr. William Lee Smothers, 70, of Huntingdon, Tennessee passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at the Life Care Center in Bruceton.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 10:30 AM in the Chapel of Chase Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Humbles Cemetery. Bro. Wayne Holmes and Bro. Alex Hilliard will officiate the service.

The family will receive friends in the Cherrywood Room of Chase Funeral Home on Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Saturday from 8:00 AM until time of service.

Mr. Smothers was born March 30, 1946 in Huntingdon, Tennessee, to the late Thomas Leo and Mary Belle (May) Smothers. He was a graduate of Huntingdon High School in 1964 and was a graduate Bethel College and the LSU School of Banking. He was an active member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School and Bible Study for 40 years. He was a past member and past president of the Huntingdon Rotary Club, past president of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce and past president of the Carroll County Cancer Society. I 1977, Mr. Smothers was chosen to receive the "Distinguished Service Award" by the Huntingdon Jaycees. In 1994, he was chosen by the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce as the Business Person of the Year. He was also a 50 - Year Member and Past Master of Huntingdon Lodge #106 of the F&AM.

Mr. Smothers began work at the Bank of Huntingdon in 1965 where he served as President from 1978-1995. He retired in January 2001. During his banking career, he served on various committees and in multiple positions with the Tennessee Bankers Association.

He was preceded in death in 2015 by a beloved Grandson, Solomon Lee DeVille, and a brother, John David Smothers, 2006.

Mr. Smothers is survived by his wife of 48 years, Linda (Hurt) Smothers; daughter Rachel (Daniel) Williams and their children, Kaitlyn, Danielle, Emily, Lauren, Josie, Claudia and Luke; and daughter Laura (Auston) Deville and their children Landon and Celia; and a brother, Joe (Lana) Smothers . He also leaves two brothers-in-law: Ted (Pam) Hurt and Richard Hurt, and 4 nephews and 5 nieces.

Pallbearers are Nathan Smothers, Jacob Smothers, Jack Smothers, Shane Batholomew, Seth Bennett, Bobby Smith and Brad Smith. Honorary Pallbearers are Billy Christian, Jeff Carter, Harry Easley, Jim Forbess, Gary Hall, Fred Holladay, Gerald Kirksey, Mike Morello, Wallace Pinkley, Scott Portis, Billy Times, and Walton West.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Solomon Lee DeVille Memorial Art Scholarship at The Dixie Carter PAC in Huntingdon, Mt. Zion UMC or any charity of your choice.
